Throughout the years, chocolate has gotten a bad rap for being a decadent treat that only serves to destabilize insulin levels and cause weight gain. But while overconsumption of poor-quality chocolate may not be wise, consuming reasonable amounts of premium-quality chocolates holds a great number of health benefits, such as reducing oxidative stress, cholesterol levels, blood pressure and the risk of cardiovascular disease! The key is moderation and obtaining high quality chocolate, like Amore di Mona specialty chocolates.
Amore di Mona is a Louisville, Kentucky-based collection of nutrition centered food artisans and health care providers focused on creating an assortment of chocolates that are allergen-free, low glycemic and vegan made with natural, preservative-free, non-GMO and kosher ingredients.
Because many of the collective’s family and friends suffer from food allergies, Amore di Mona was aware that there were limited, if any, soy-, nut-, gluten- and dairy-free options available on the market. As a result, they began making their own chocolate to include in the special diet cakes, cookies and muffins they created. The chocolate they created contained only raw, organic, Fair Trade agave nectar, cocoa solids and cocoa butter, and it was such a hit that customers soon began inquiring about the purchase of Amore di Mona chocolate without the cakes, muffins and cookies! To fulfill the demand, Amore di Mona developed their current selection of luxurious European-style chocolate.
My Kid’s Food Allergies caught up with Chef Meagan Jeanette of Amore di Mona to get the low-down on their upscale, allergen-free chocolates.
Creating Healthy, Elegant Chocolates
Amore di Mona ensures the quality of their products with a European flair by importing their cocoa butter from Belgium and Holland, their cocoa solids from Belgium, their raw, organic and Fair Trade agave nectar from Madhava, and also by including fruits that are fresh, sulfite-free, sundried and organic.
Chef Meagan told MKFA that Amore di Mona’s production facility and equipment are privately owned and dedicated to making only Amore di Mona products. Both the facility and equipment are “free of common allergens.” All of Amore di Mona’s products are gluten-, soy-, dairy-, tree nut- and peanut-free, non-GMO, low glycemic, vegan and free of preservatives and artificial ingredients.
At present, Chef Meagan’s favorite Amore di Mona confection is the Caramela with Crunchy Coffee Beans. “It is made using La Semeuse’s Organic and Fair Trade coffee beans, and they are simply the best in the world. There is not even a hint of bitterness,” Chef Meagan says. “I love the crunchy texture and rich flavor of the coffee beans within the silky, sweet Caramela.”
As for the customers, the Caramela is the front-runner as well. “Kids like this flavor especially,” says Chef Meagan.
Currently, Amore di Mona offers several chocolate bars, including the plain Dark Chocolate and Caramela, the Caramela with Cherries, the Caramela with Cranberries, the Caramela with Coffee Beans, Dark Chocolate with Currants, and Dark Chocolate with coffee beans. They also offer gift boxes that include a mixture of three different bars, an assortment of all their chocolate selections arranged in an elegant gift box, and plain dark chocolate in bulk for use in recipes that call for chocolate.
And speaking of recipes, the Amore di Mona website offers a variety of truly inspired elegant and creative recipes and tutorials for customers to create their own masterpieces using Amore di Mona quality, allergen-free bulk chocolate. Recipes include a “Spring Inspired Chocolate Cake” with an allergen-free batter, Dark Chocolate Truffles, “Dark Chocolate Filled Gingerbread Cookies” and “Watermelon Sorbet with Dark Chocolate Seeds.”
What People Are Saying
Amore di Mona products have been featured in many print and online publications, including The VegNews, Ana Phylaxis, The Perplexing Palate and more.
Kate at Ana Phylaxis wrote that Amore di Mona chocolate bars were “the only chocolate bar I have been able to find that is guaranteed to be nut-free.” Kate emphasized “bar” because even though there are now many options for allergen-free chocolate chip substitutes, “sometimes a gal craves a chocolate bar, a good ole-fashioned chocolate bar,” and Amore di Mona delivered.
The Perplexing Palate noted that Amore di Mona and their “incredible” chocolates was a “favorite” booth at a local Gluten-Free, Allergen-Free Expo. They also commented on the “heartwarming” sight of “so many dairy-free people popping a Caramela in their mouths, without fear, and getting this look of utter delight on their face. The original Caramela is a beautiful, tender vegan caramel enrobed in a silky dark chocolate that just melts in your mouth. There is no equal.”
Chef Meagan added, “As a chef, I am personally dedicated to the idea that food can and should be both wholesome and delicious. Amore di Mona’s Couverture Chocolat Speciale is suitable for most special diets, yet will never compromise flavor. This is what sets us apart from other allergy-friendly brands. We will always use the highest quality ingredients available to create the smoothest, most luxurious chocolate possible.”
As for the future, Chef Meagan told MKFA that Amore di Mona is “in the research and development stage for a couple new and exciting products, but my lips are sealed!”
Style, Sophistication and Grace: Giving Back
